We’ve all heard the phrase ‘You are what you eat’, however, what most people don’t realize is that things get in our bodies not just by way of mouth, but through the skin as well. I always warn people to read food labels carefully in order to avoid ingestion of harmful toxins, but what about all the harmful chemicals found in cosmetic products? Our delicate skin cells are quite permeable, and substances seep through and end up in our blood stream with ease. Think of the nicotine patch or the hormone patch. Many personal care products like perfume, deodorant, lotions, creams, make-up, toothpaste, and hair dyes can also be a source of toxic, skin-leaching chemicals.
Medical research shows that significant amounts of cosmetic ingredients, including carcinogenic substances, penetrate the skin and end up in the blood stream. Many chemicals in cosmetics don’t cause obvious signs of toxicity on the skin but slowly poison us thorough repeated use.

I’ve found an amazing website that everyone needs to use when purchasing any kind of personal care product (be it shampoo, moisturizer, body wash, etc):
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com
It is a searchable database of toxic ingredients in cosmetic and personal care products. They have nearly every brand – ranging from drug store brands to higher end ones to natural and organic brands. All you need to do is type in the brand, and a list of the products by that brand will come up. Each item is given a score of 0-10 with 0-2 being low hazard, 3-6 moderate hazard, and 7-10 high hazard. It also breaks down all the ingredients in the product so you can see which are the most damaging.
I must say I was completely shocked when I looked up some of the brands I was using on a daily basis that I thought were ‘natural’. It just goes to show that even if a product is labeled ‘natural’ or is from a reputable brand, you never really know just how damaging it can be…until now! I urge everyone to use this site in order to avoid this constant bombardment of toxins into our bodies.
